STEM for Soil Pollution with Design Thinking method

(2nd Kindergarten of Neo Rysio, Afroditi Flora & Kalliopi Tzouka)

Our students worked at their teams following the steps of Design Thinking process

 1. Empathize

We started by talking about our planet and how pollution affects the soil, plants, and people. The children shared their feelings and ideas about what makes a city dirty or clean. They watched pictures and short videos to understand how pollution harms nature.

2. Define

Together we defined the problem: “The soil in our city is polluted, and we need to find a way to make it clean again.”

3. Ideate

The children brainstormed different ideas on how to help the Earth. They imagined clean cities, green parks, and machines that could clean the soil. Everyone shared creative thoughts about what could make our world better.

4. Prototype

The children created two models:

  • One showing a city with visible soil pollution (trash, smoke, no plants).
  • Another showing a clean and healthy city with trees, gardens, and a special soil-cleaning machine they invented!

5. ATest

We presented both models to our classmates and discussed which ideas worked best to keep the Earth clean. The children explained how their cleaning machine could help save the planet.

 "Clean soil" and "Soil contamination"

At the beginning of our project, we dealt with soil and its pollution. We watched videos and presentations and learned how soil is polluted. We discussed, reflected and gave our own solutions to the problem. We planted seeds, experimented, painted, made organic fertilizer "Compost". We made two models, one with "Clean soil" and one with "Polluted soil". Together, all the collaborating schools made a poster.

Soil Pollution/Didem Köse

Soil Pollution First, we examined soil pollution. We talked about its causes and played games. We prepared a poster with our partners to prevent soil pollution. We discussed how to prevent soil pollution, went through the problem-solving stages, created a prototype, and then made compost.

Codeweek 2025

Kindergarten of Toixio Kastoria- Greece Ηλίας Τουτσογλίδης-Agni Vasileiadou

As part of the etwinning program entitled "Stem For a Cleaner World", we participated in the European Programming Week (CodeWeek), with two interactive activities:

1.BeeBot robot becomes a Water Hero!

As part of the European Code Week (CodeWeek), students participate in an interactive activity with the educational robot Bee-Bot, which takes on the role of "water hero". Through simple programming, Bee-Bot moves on a mat with pictures and words that present everyday problems related to water pollution and waste (e.g. dripping tap, garbage in a river).

Its mission is to identify the problem areas and reach squares that show the correct, ecological solutions, such as "turn off the tap" or "clean the river". Each time the robot reaches a square, a child reads or describes the picture. If it is a bad habit, the group makes a rejection gesture (e.g. they say "No!" with their hands), while for a good habit they reward with clapping and "Bravo!".

2.We clean the park with BeetBot

BeetBot is the “Park Cleaner”. Children program it to go to the trash, collect it and transport it to the correct bin. They choose a piece of trash, find the route and give BeetBot the commands. If they make a mistake, they reprogram it. Through the activity they learn to think logically, cooperate and take care of the environment in a fun way.

A letter about climate change to the leaders of our countries

Kindergarten Toixio of Kastoria-Greece Ηλίας Τουτσογλίδης -Agni Vasileiadou

As part of our etwinning program “Stem for a cleaner world”, we are sending a letter about climate change to the leaders of our countries. We are also participating in an important global action organized by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (ESPN) and WWF Greece, on the occasion of the International Climate Conference (COP30), which will be held in Brazil in November 2025. We talked to the children about climate change, about how important it is to protect nature and change habits in order to keep our planet clean and healthy. Each child drew their own message to the Prime Minister of Greece and the President of the Conference, asking for effective measures to be taken to protect the environment. The cards of our young students travel through this action to Brazil, so that the voice of our children can reach world leaders. In this way, the young students learned that together we can contribute to the protection of our planet.

EUCodeweek 2025 Kindergarten of Dispilio Kastoria -Greece

Kindergarten of Dispilio Kastoria -Greece   Ευσεβεία Ασβεστά-Κωνσταντινίδου with Despoina Tsakiri and Matina Pitouli

We participate in code week

Children become little detectives and crack the secret code as they are asked to "read" and break the code to find the magical image. They color the boxes (pixels) according to the color and position given by the code. They pay attention to the position of the colors and discover the image. The kindergarten teacher creates an initial pattern with colors (red, yellow, blue) and asked the children to repeat it several times. Through the game, we want our students to learn the basic principles of programming, practice algorithmic thinking, and collaborate.
